Incident at 59N/50W

Summary

1997-05-13: The American Airlines MD-11, callsign AAL87 was on a flight from London to Chicago. The British Airways DC-10, callsign BaW9671 was on a flight from London, Gatwick to Dallas, Fort Worth. The MD-11 was in cruise flight at FL350 when a passenger started to experiance severe chest pains. The crew advised Gander ACC of the situation and requested a clearance for a descent and diverson to Gander. The Gander ACC was not able to to give the clearance due to traffic so the crew declared a medical emergency and carried out a contingency plan descent to FL280 where they were then cleared direct to Gander. A technical loss of separation occured with the DC-10 during the descent. The MD-11 landed in Gander at 12:37 NDT without further incident. The passenger was then transported to hospital by ambulance. TSB closed.
