Incident at Gander FIR

Summary

1997-04-01: The Continental Airlines DC-10, N15069, was approx. 100nm west of Gander when the crew advised of an intermittent fire warning on #2 engine which the crew decided to shut down. The aircraft held for a short time and then proceeded back to Newark, its departure point. The aircraft started to dump fuel at 0222z, 20 000 lb. dumped and completed at 0226. The pilot declared an emergency at 0227z. The pilot was offered Halifax as an available airport but they continued to Newark. The aircraft departed Moncton airspace at 0302z. TSB evaluating.
