Incident at HALIFAX / STANFIELD INTL NS (CYHZ)

Summary

1997-02-26: The aircraft departed St. John's enroute to Halifax. During landing at Halifax on RWY 24 both left main gear tires blew. The aircraft came to a stop 700ft. short of taxiway "C". The aircraft maintained the centerline until the last two hundred feet as it veered slightly to the left. It appears that the main wheels were frozen. The TSB stated that there is a voluntary modification available to address wheel freeze in this model aircraft however, whether the incident aircraft was modified or not is undetermined at this time. There was minimal aircraft damage and some passengers were complaining of back problems. UPDATE: There was no mechanical failure. The modification mentioned above was deactivated after the operator of this aircraft discovered that another operator had problems with the modification. Aircraft was washed the previous night. The ramp and runways at the departure point were dry. The operator will be reviewing their wash procedures.
