Incident at TORONTO / LESTER B. PEARSON INTL ON (CYYZ)

Summary

1996-10-02: The Dassault Mystere-Falcon 200 aircraft was at the ramp with crew and passengers on board preparing for departure. The aircraft engines had not been started but the auxiliary power unit (APU) located in the tail of the aircraft was operating. The flight crew observed an APU fire warning in the cockpit and carried out the APU fire drill system including activating the APU fire extinguishing system. The fire was extinguished. A metal fuel supply line on the APU engine (Sunstrand engine) had failed and the leaking fuel was ignited. Minor damage occured to the aircraft skin structure in the tailcone area as a result of the fire. The aircraft APU system is not approved for nor can it be operated while the aircraft is airborne. The operator has indicated a service difficulty report will be issued to Transport Canada. (From a TSB Initial Notification (#A96O0198).)
