Incident at Gander, NFLD - 750 miles east

Summary

1996-05-16: While enroute to Toronto, a flash fire and smoke occurred with a rear galley coffee maker. A flight attendant manually tripped the circuit breakers and the fire and smoke ceased. A portable extinguisher was made ready but was not required. The flight crew were notified. The captain confirmed smoke and fire had ceased and instructed that the circuit breakers not be reset. The first officer went to the galley for an inspection. When a circuit breaker for the unaffected coffee maker was reset, smoke appeared again and the circuit breaker was manually tripped. The first officer returned to the cockpit and advised the captain, who then went to confirm the breakers were tripped and were not to be reset. The flight continued to destination with all other galley systems normal. The coffee maker was removed and sent for repairs. Ops. Impact -- unknown. From a TSB Initial Notification.
