Incident at Vicinity of Varadero International Airport (Cuba) (TCAS alert)
Summary
1996-02-03: The Canada 3000 A320 had departed Varadero and was cleared to 5,000 feet and to intercept the 013 radial. The Royal L-1011 was inbound to Varadero on the 013 radial at 6,000 feet and was cleared for the VOR/DME approach to runway 24 via the 11 DME arc. The Royal L-1011 crew began their descent to join the arc at 5,000 feet. As the aircraft approached 5,500 feet, the crew received a call from ATC asking for their altitude. At the same time, they saw the Canada 3000 A-320 and started a left turn to avoid it. The crew of the A-320 received a TCAS RA warning of the traffic 600 feet above. The crew had visual contact with the l-1011 approximately one-half of a mile away. Ops. impact -- unknown. From a TSB Initial Notification.
