Incident at EDMONTON INTL AB (CYEG)

Summary

1996-11-29: The aircraft was approximately 4600 ASL on a left base for runway 03 at Edmonton International Airport when the aircraft encountered severe icing. The crew reported that a loss of lateral control was occurring and they immediately climbed back up to warmer air. Control of the aircraft was restored. The aircraft was vectored onto a long final, however, the aircraft remained above the freezing level until approximately 5 miles when a rapid descent was made to get below the icing level. The aircraft landed safely at 1714Z. UPDATE: Further investigation determined that the crew elected to climb into warmer air to allow time for the anti-icing system to effectively clear the wings. In this particular instance, the loss of control referred to in the above paragraph was a reference to ice build up. The crew reported that they could not control the amount of ice that was accumulating. There was in fact no loss of aircraft control.
