Incident at Calgary, Alberta

Summary

1996-12-10: Moments after AAL1876 departed runway 16 at Calgary, the crew advised Calgary Tower that they had a possible fire on board and that they were returning to land. The aircraft landed safely on runway 16 without further incident. The aircraft was taxied to the ramp area. There was a total of 119 SOB and 3 1/2 hours of fuel. UPDATE: A second departure resulted in the same smell and the aircraft once again returned to Calgary. The aircraft was subsequently ferried to Chicago where an intensive inspection found plastic film in one of the galley ovens. The aircraft is now back in service.
