Incident at Sioux Lookout, Ontario


1996-12-10: The aircraft which was on a routine charter flight from Bearskin Lake, Ontario, landed on runway 16 at Sioux Lookout. Air Radio personnel advised the pilot that large amounts of smoke was seen coming from the right engine. The pilot acknowledged and advised Air Radio that he would continue to taxi and park the aircraft. Large amounts of smoke continued to emit from the engine. Once the aircraft was parked and the engine shut down, Air Radio further advised the pilot that fire was now visible in the engine necell and lower wing area. Fire extinguishers could not bring the fire under control. ERS were called and eventually the fire was extinguished. The aircraft is now at a maintenance hangar in Sioux Lookout. TSB to update on cause of fire and damage. UPDATE: Maintenance found that the turbo charger had seized. Oil had leaked out of the turbo charger cases onto the hot exterior producing smoke and flames. The turbo charger has been replaced and the aircraft was returned to service.
