1996-12-10: The pilot of C-FGJB
, a PA28
aircraft hit a tree and birds on departure. There was damage to the port wing. The aircraft landed safely at 1350Z. UPDATE: The aircraft had been purchased at a local grass strip east of Portage La Prairie. The new owner, accompanied by a second pilot was conducting a take-off with the intent of flying to Southport for fuel. During the initial phases of the take-off roll, the aircraft was allowed to drift to the left and the left wing tip contacted a tree. The pilots continued unaware that the wing had struck a tree. The owner of the grass strip had observed the take off and called Southport Tower to advise the pilots that they had struck a tree on departure. The Tower advised the aircraft but the aircraft radio was producing side tone when transmitting. ERS vehicles were called out as a precaution and the aircraft landed without further incident. After inspecting the wing tip, fixing the radio and refuelling, the aircraft departed Southport.
