Incident
at Thompson, Manitoba
Summary
1996-05-28: The Mitsubishi MU-2B was landing at Thompson, Manitoba, after an engine calibration check flight. The aircraft touched down on runway 23, reportedly at about 120 knots, with about 2,400 feet of runway remaining. The pilot was not initially able to bring the aircraft to a stop and departed the end of the runway at about 20 knots. The pilot taxied the aircraft back to the runway and to the operator's hangar. Neither the pilot nor the maintenance-crewman was injured, but the aircraft's right wing tip fuel tank sustained damage as the aircraft manoeuvered in the soft ground at the end of runway 23. The right engine was reportedly being calibrated during the flight, and was developing about 40% of takeoff torque during the landing, preventing it from changing to "ground idle" or reverse thrust after touchdown. Another maintenance test flight earlier in the day was completed without incident with a similar engine power output.
