Incident at SASKATOON / JOHN G. DIEFENBAKER INTL SK (CYXE) (Navigation error, Conflict - loss of separation, ATS operating irregularity)

Summary

1996-05-02: An Air BC DHC-8 was on a 4 mile final to Runway 09 at Saskatoon, and ACA 183, a DC-9, was second on approach and 4 miles behind the DHC-8. ABS 220 was inbound to Saskatoon from Regina and was cleared right hand down wind to follow the DC-9. The crew of ABS 220 advised ATC that they had the traffic and began a right turn. The Tower Controller realized that ABS 220 was in the process of following the DHC-8 rather than the DC-9. ABS 220 was instructed to turn left and continue downwind. The aircraft passed with approximately 400 feet vertical and 1 1/4 miles lateral separation. All three aircraft landed without further incident.
