Incident at Pauingassi Ice Strip, Manitoba (Incursion - runway - vehicle)

Summary

1996-02-28: The pilot of a Sowind Air Navajo Chieftain had just landed the aircraft at the Pauingassi Ice Strip and was in the process of turning the aircraft around to taxi back to the apron area, when a truck entered the strip from an access road at the south end of the strip. The truck driver did not see the aircraft because of a snow bank at the intersection and immediately applied brakes. The truck slid forward and struck the right wing of the aircraft damaging the leading edge. The pilot shut the engines down, but the right windmilling propeller struck the box of the truck. The truck continued forward and pushed the aircraft across the strip into the snowbank on the opposite side of the strip. The aircraft and other operators had been using the strip throughout the winter without incident. The pilot overflew the strip prior to landing to check for obstacles and to alert the people on the ground of his presence. This mishap appears to be an isolated occurrence. There were no injuries to the one pilot and six passengers on board, but substantial damage to the aircraft.
