Incident at Dryden, Ontario (Incursion - runway - vehicle)

Summary

1997-06-06: Walsten Air Service BE20 was delayed in arriving at Dryden by five minutes due to a vehicle on runway 11/29. Three Canadian Military Helicopters had arrived at Dryden on the 10th and over nighted. The pilots arrived at the airport, and observed that their helicopters were contaminated with ice and they asked and received permission to have their machines towed to the MNR Hangar where they would be placed in thawed out. Maintenance at Dryden (Staff 20) drove to the MNR Hangar in search of some tow ropes. While the Maintenance person was in the process of locating these items the owner of a refuelling agency at Dryden elected to tow the helicopters without radio escort. Staff 20 advised Winnipeg ACC that a tractor was hauling helicopters without radios. This information was passed to the crew of C-FKJI who reduced their approach speeds and suffered no further inconvenience.
