Summary

1996-12-17: Remarks: The pilot reported smoke in the cockpit then declared an emergency shortly after departure. The aircraft returned to St. John's and landed safely at 1216Z with CFR standing by. TSB evaluating. UPDATE: Maintenance determined that oil was entering the bleed airduct feeding the Air-Conditioning packs. The source of the oil leak was from either a failed #1 or #2 bearing oil seal.
