Incident at Gander Oceanic (ATS operating irregularity)


1996-08-22: The B767, callsign MSR 990, was out of New York enroute to Cairo at FL330 routing in part 45N/40W (0646z) & 46N/30W (0736). At 0646Z the crew requested to deviate north to avoid thunderstorms. ATC was unable to approve the request due to traffic. At 0649Z the crew advised that they were deviating approx. 20 miles north of course to avoid the storm. The crew reported back on track at 0656z. TSB no involvement.
