Accident at Millers Waters, Gander, NF.

1996-07-17: The Piper J-3-65 was taking off from a small pond enroute to Gander and was at an altitude of about 150 ft. above the water when the engine started to sputter and lose power. There was insufficent area to land ahead so the pilot attempted a turn to the left in order to land in a small cove. However the airspeed started to decay. Just as the pilot began to lower the nose to gain airspeed the aircraft stalled and spun into the water. The aircraft was resting in about three feet of water, the pilot who was the sole occupant was not injured. More to follow on the power loss reason after the engine is inspected by an AME. TSB closed.
