Incident at Gander, Nfld.

Summary

1997-03-25: On landing the aircraft struck a snow windrow which apparently caused the starboard engine to flame out.The crew shut down the engine and taxied to the ramp. Another aircraft reported smoke coming from the shutdown engine. The crew exited the aircraft and attempted to extinguish the fire. ERS responded and the fire was put out. No injuries. TSB evaluating. UPDATE - Case Closed.
2013-03-12: UPDATE FROM TSB REPORT: A96A0027: THE SWEARINGEN (SPR921, C-GERW) LANDED ON RUNWAY 31 AT ST JOHNS, NFLD. DURING THE RUNWAY ROLL OUT, THE AIRCRAFT PASSED THROUGH A RIDGE OF SNOW THAT CROSSED THE RUNWAY AND THE RIGHT ENGINE FLAMED OUT. THE CREW EXITED THE RUNWAY AT TAXIWAY DELTA AND PROCEEDED TO THE RAMP WITH THE RIGHT ENGINE NOT OPERATING. GANDER ATC ADVISED THE CREW THAT SMOKE APPEARED TO BE COMING FROM THE RIGHT ENGINE. THE CAPTAIN STOPPED THE AIRCRAFT AND COMPLETED THE ENGINE FIRE PROCEDURE AND THE PASSENGERS WERE EVACUATED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE ERS RESPONDED AND SPRAYED THE RIGHT ENGINE WITH FOAM. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED THE RIGHT ENGINE (GARRETT TPE 331-11), AND FOUND NO INDICATION THAT A FIRE EXTERNAL TO THE EXHAUST AREA HAD EXISTED. THE FIRE EXTINGUISHING AGENT WAS RINSED FROM THE ENGINE AND THE ENGINE WAS INSPECTED AND GROUND RUN PER GARRETT APPROVED MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES.
