Incident at West of Timmins airport - out of control zone
Summary
1995-12-14: The C172 was on a practice flight under SVFR and reported clearing the zone to the southwest of Timmins airport after being told of inbound traffic. SVFR was cancelled and soon after ONT323 (DHC-8), inbound from the south was cleared for a VOR/DME runway 10 approach. C172 gave a further position report on Timmins 260 radial, 9DME at 2500ft. The DHC-8 proceeded the Timmins beacon outbound at 2700 ft at which point his TCAS pointed the traffic as 1 mile away. The DHC-8 climbed to 3000 ft, passed by the traffic and landed safely on runway 10. Meanwhile the C172 maintaining 2500ft, realized his position in relation to the traffic and descended to 2000ft before observing the DHC-8 pass above him with what he described as "comfortable separation".
