Accident at Pancake Bay, Ontario

Summary

1995-11-23: Aircraft was on a VFR flight plan from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie. Pilot, who was alone, called YAM FSS for weather at 2158Z while 13 nm northwest of Wawa. He was told conditions were below VFR and would need speical VFR approval to enter the zone. Pilot acknowledged this and continued towards YAM. Near Pancake Bay, pilot encountered visibilities of approx. 1/4 mile in heavy snow showers. Pilot descended to remain VFR. Pilot called YAM FSS but heard nothing. Pilot decided to attempt a landing on highway 17. Aircraft struck and snapped a power line. Pilot maintained control, landed on the highway, and taxiied into MNR base. Aircraft sustained broken windshield, slightly damaged left wing tip, and 2-3" deep dent in forward edge of vertical fin. Pilot sustained minor whip lash. Ops. Impact -- unknown.
