Incident at vicinity of Timmins Airport (CYTS) (Other operational incident, Conflict - potential, Communication navigation surveillance/air traffic system, Communication error)


1995-06-15: The pilot of C-FIXO reported 20NM southeast of Timmins Airport (CYTS) at 2009Z and was given the airport advisory. The flight crew of CRQ818 reported 20NM north of Timmins Airport (CYYTS) at 2013Z and were given an advisory including C-FIXO as traffic inbound from the southeast. In all subsequent reports, C-FIXO identified his position as east or southeast of the Timmins Airport. At 2015, CRQ818 reported final for runway 21 and C-FIXO reported on the left downwind for runway 21. CRQ818 advised they were breaking off their approach as they were too high, and turned to the west to circle around and follow C-FIXO. On turning west, teh flight crew of CRQ818 spotted C-FIXO ahead of them on a right downwind for runway 21. CRQ818 maintained a lower altitude to avoid C-FIXO. Both aircraft landed without incident. The pilot of C-FIXO advised that he had always been southwest of the airport, had actually joined the right downwind for runway 21 and apologized for the error. Ops. impact -- unknown.
