Incident at TORONTO / LESTER B. PEARSON INTL ON (CYYZ) (ATM - NAVAIDS/radar)
Summary
1997-05-02: AT 0944Z, an emergency transponder code (7700) appeared. The radar return began to overload the system and at 1110Z, two positions (Picton & Simcoe) failed. All traffic at Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal was ground stopped for approx. 30 minutes due the impending system failure. Separation was maintained, the Toronto radar was taken off-line and the overload condition eliminated. Ops. Impact -- numerous aircraft delayed.
