Incident at THOMPSON MB (CYTH)

Summary

1997-03-27: The aircraft departed Thompson on a flight to Kelsey (ZEE). When the gear was retracted the left main did not indicate up and locked. The pilot conducted a fly by. It appeared that the gear was not in a locked position. After burning off fuel, the aircraft landed and the gear partially collapsed causing the aircraft to depart the side of the runway. The runway was closed until 010130Z. There were no injuries and extent of aircraft damage to left main gear, left cowling and left wingtip. The pilot was the sole occupant. Examination of the failed gear leg showed that the left main gear aft trunnion pin was inserted into the trunnion past the lock-wire alignment hole, so that it was not secured by the lock-wire. The pin was then free to move out of position, removing support for the aft part of the gear leg. The pin was replaced during an inspection two days before the occurrence. The operator advises that the maintenance procedure will be changed and that a service difficulty report will be submitted to TC.
