Accident at Hatchet Lake, 20 NM W, Sask.


1996-03-21: The DeHavilland DHC-2 MK.1 Beaver Seaplane, C-GMGV departed a fishing lodge at Hatchet Lake, Saskatchewan enroute to a fly-in camp 20 NM west. About five minutes after departure, the aircraft's engine lost power. After unsuccessful attempts to restart the engine, the pilot carried out a forced landing, the aircraft's floats were damaged, and the aircraft sank, coming to rest nose down in about 15 feet of water. The pilot and six passengers reportedly exited the aircraft and swam to shore without injury, and were picked up by boats from the lodge. The winds at the time of the occurrence were reportedly south-east at 10 kts, with waves of about four feet in the area of the forced landing.
