Incident at THUNDER BAY ON (CYQT) (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)

Summary

1996-03-21: After a formation of four F-18s did touch and go landings at Thunder Bay, Black Lead indicated that his aircraft had a gear problem. There was some discussion of diverting to International Falls but due to fuel considerations Black Lead decided to land at Thunder Bay. An emergency was declared at 1814Z. On landing Black Lead broke one threshold light when it was hit just prior to touchdown. Both tires were blown on the left main gear and the aircraft came to rest on the runway 07, sixty degrees left of runway heading. The emergency response crews extinguished a fire in the area of the left landing gear. Tire marks on runway 07 seem to indicate that the left wheel did not rotate at any time during the landing sequence. Runway 07-25 was closed for two hours while the F-18 was removed from the runway. Favourable winds permitted Runway 12 to be used and airport operations continued uninterrupted. The weather and runway condition were both good and were not considered contributing factors to the occurrence.
