Incident at Wassagomach,2 NM E, Manitoba (Conflict - near collision (VFR or IFR))

Summary

1997-03-21: A risk of collision incident occurred 2 NM E of Wassagomach, Manitoba, involving two helicopters. C-GEOY, a Hughes 500, Yukon Helicopters Ltd., departed Wassagomach, Manitoba enroute to Island Lake, Manitoba on a ferry flight. C-FLJR, an Enstrom F28F, Provincial Helicopters Ltd., was inbound to Wassagomach from St. Theresa Point, Manitoba with two passengers. Two NM East of Wassagomach, C-FLJR passed with about 200 feet horizontal and no vertical separation from C-GEOY. The pilot of C-GEOY called the FSS on the mandatory frequency before departure, but did not request traffic information. FSS procedure at the time of the occurrence was to provide traffic information only on request. The pilot of C-FLJR heard the transmission, but associated it with another helicopter which he observed in the vicinity. When he observed C-GEOY, the pilot of C-FLJR carried out a steep left turn. The pilot of C-GEOY reportedly did not take evasive action. There were no reported injuries and there was no reported aircraft damage.
