Accident at Spoonbill Lake, Ontario
Summary
1997-03-21: The pilot of C-GYUY, a Cessna 185 was landing on Spoonbill Lake when the aircraft began to swing to the right. Attempts to correct the swing were unsuccessful, the aircraft drifted sideways and the left ski caught an ice ridge. The left gear folded under the aircraft, the prop struck the displaced ski and the crankshaft sheared, causing the prop to become detached. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the engine, prop, gear, and fuselage. The pilot and two passengers were not injured. The wind was reported as calm and the ice conditions for this particular landing were good. The aircraft was not equipped with a tail wheel ski. Maintenance suspects a tail wheel steering mechanism malfunction.
