Incident at south of St. Anthony, Nfld.

Summary

1997-03-18: While enroute from JFK to Brussels the pilot requested a diversion to Gander due to in-flight deployment of the thrust reverser on #2 engine. Aircraft dumped fuel for 20 minutes before landing safely with CFR on standby. A follow up investigation determined that the thrust reverser had not actually deployed in flight. UPDATE - The pilot was alerted to a possible thrust reverser deployment by a reverser unlock light in the cockpit followed by a momentary aircraft yaw. The thrust reverser was not deployed when viewed on the ground. The aircraft departed Gander on an MEL with the #2 engine thrust reverser locked in the closed position. TSB case closed.
