Incident at Gander Ocean
Summary
1997-03-20: Enroute from JFK to London, U.K. the pilot requested descent and clearance to Gander due to loss of left hydraulic system. ATC unable clearance due to traffic. Pilot declared emergency, turned south of course and descended to FL290. ATC then issued requested clearance. Landed Gander safely at 0628z. UPDATE - Maintenance found a chafed hydraulic pressure line in the aft pylon faring area. The line was changed and the aircraft returned to service.
