Incident at Gander Ocean Airspace (Conflict - loss of separation)

Summary

1997-07-22: British Airways (BAW) 178 and Air Canada (ACA) 868 were on the same track to 30 West. BAW was behind and faster. At 1830z BAW requested climb to FL 370. Gander ATC cleared aircraft to FL 330 as ACA already occupied FL 370. Clearance was relayed via Gander International Flight Service Station (IFSS). The IFSS specialist cleared the aircraft to FL330 but the aircraft readback FL370. The discrepancy was not detected by the specialist. When BAW reported level at FL370, the estimated longitudinal separation with ACA was 6 minutes (require 10 minutes). ACA cleared to FL410. TSB case closed.
