Accident at BRANTFORD ON (CYFD)
2009-05-05: UPDATE Supplemental information received from T.S.B. Initial Notification [#A94O0279]: The privately-registered Cessna 172M aircraft was on a night VFR flight from Hamilton, ON to Brantford, ON with the pilot and two passengers on board. The three were returning from the southern United States and had landed at Hamilton to clear customs. No flight plan, flight notification or itinerary had been filed for the flight. Shortly before midnight (October 22), an ELT signal was reported by the flight crew of an airline flying at FL320. The Search and Rescue Centre was notified and shortly thereafter, SARSAT (satellite) confirmed the ELT signal location to be at the Brantford Airport. A ground search party using radio direction-finding equipment located the aircraft wreckage in a field one-quarter (¼) of a mile west of the Brantford Airport at approximately 05:24 EDT (October 23). The pilot and one passenger were fatally injured and one passenger was rescued but died in hospital later that same day. Dense fog in the Brantford area hampered the ground search for the source of the ELT signal. The Board determined that the aircraft struck the ground while the pilot was turning onto final approach; the pilot had lost visual reference with the ground, likely because of fog conditions.
