Incident at Embrun/Russell, ONT

Summary

1997-09-02: While climbing in VMC to drop parachute jumpers at 9500' ASL, the pilot encountered a large bank of cloud near 8000' ASL. A 180 degree turn was initiated to avoid the cloud. The pilot attempted to maintain visual reference and the aircraft entered a spiral to the right. Control was regained using instruments and level flight established at 6000' ASL just before exiting cloud. The jumpers exited the aircraft over the jump zone and the aircraft landed without further incident. Substantial damage to aircraft; no reported injuries. From a TSB Initial Notification.
