Incident at Mountain View, ONT

Summary

1997-08-21: During initial takeoff, the canopy opened. The solo student grabbed the canopy with his left hand and closed it. Meanwhile, the glider climbed up on the towplane. The student, seeing his extreme high position, elected to release and perform a downwind landing. The latch showed no sign of wear. The student experienced no sudden gust or jerk during flight. It is believed that the latch may not have been closed properly. Crews have been briefed. Ops. Impact -- none.
