Incident at Newark Airport, New Jersey, USA


1997-08-06: On approach to runway 22L at Newark International Airport, approximately seven (7) miles back and 2,500 feet AGL (in turbulence -- thunderstorms in the area), the crew initiated a go-around. The aircraft continued to descend at go-around power and 16 degrees nose-up pitch. The throttles were firewalled for about 45 seconds until climb was assured. The lowest altitude on the approach was 1,667 feet as per the flight data recorder. The flight diverted to another airport where the engines were inspected and found serviceable.
