Incident at LONDON ON (CYXU)

Summary

1996-04-22: The aircraft was parked on the ramp with only the crew on board. The flight attendant reported to the flight crew that there was smoke coming from the passenger service unit above seats 1C and 1D. Electrical power was turned off and a fire extinguisher was discharged into the area. Damage was limited to a burn through in the head liner. Maintenance determined that chaffed wires to the light ballast had shorted out and caused the fire. A survey of the company's other DHC-8-300 aircraft found two others with chaffed wiring. The company is now checking its DHC-8-100 aircraft as well. From a TSB Initial Notification.
