Incident at Broadview vicinity (ATS operating irregularity)
1997-10-22: Air Canada Flight 179, a DC-9, enroute Winnipeg to Vancouver, was proceeding via Winnipeg direct Lumsden, Saskatchewan at FL350, estimated abeam Broadview, Saskatchewan at 2331Z. Canadian Flight 621, B737, enroute Calgary to Winnipeg via J504, at FL350 due to rough ride, was estimated over Broadview, Saskatchewan at 2338Z. As the two flights approached one another TCAS resolution advisory messages were activated in both aircraft. ACA179 climbed to FL355 and CDN621 descended to FL340. Radar data analysis revealed that the altitude changes were commenced when the aircraft were 5.29 miles apart. Minimum lateral separation reached 4.23 miles at which time 1200 feet of vertical separation had been achieved. Shortly after passing, both aircraft returned to their assigned altitudes.
