Incident at WINNIPEG / JAMES ARMSTRONG RICHARDSON INTL MB (CYWG)

Summary

1997-09-04: Canadian Airlines flight 431, a Boeing 737, was on approach to land at The Pas, Manitoba, when the A-system hydraulic pressure dropped to zero. The crew conducted a missed approach. After discussion with company maintenance control, the crew elected to return to land at Winnipeg. The crew declared an emergency and requested priority handling to return and land at Winnipeg. Emergency response services were placed on standby. The aircraft landed without further incident. The runway was closed until the aircraft could be towed to the terminal and hydraulic fluid was washed from the runway. There were no injuries to crew or passengers. Maintenance personnel determined that the A-system hydraulic fluid was depleted when a hydraulic transfer cylinder failed in the left main landing gear wheel well.
