Incident at Rankin Inlet, NWT

Summary

1997-08-19: Calm Air flight 1589, a Beech 200 aircraft, was on a scheduled passenger flight from Chesterfield Inlet to Rankin Inlet. Approximately 40 miles north-east of Rankin Inlet, the left engine gearbox chip detector warning light illuminated. The crew shut down the left engine and landed without further incident, with ERS standing by. Engineers inspected the engine and deemed it fit for a ferry flight to Thompson, Manitoba, where the aircraft is now undergoing engine repairs.
