Incident at ISLAND LAKE, 50 NM E (ATS operating irregularity)

Summary

1997-07-15: The crew of the Boeing 747, Lufthansa flight 450, had to take evasive action to avoid a balloon. The flight was en route from Frankfurt, Germany to Los Angeles, California, via Frobay (Frobisher Bay) and Brandon. There was no further incident. The balloon was described by the flight crew as the size of an apartment block. Lynn Lake and Thompson authorities responsible for launching scientific balloons have not launched any balloons not accounted for, and have not released any large balloons recently. There was no NOTAM for balloons that would have affected the flight. The Altitude Reservation Unit in Ottawa also had no record of a balloon release in the area. NORAD did not know of a balloon in the area. Winnipeg Area Control Centre is still investigating the possibility of a balloon drift.
