Incident at THUNDER BAY ON (CYQT)

Summary

1996-11-18: The Awood Air Ltd. Piper PA-31-350 Navajo Chieftain aircraft was dispatched to fly from Thunder Bay to Geraldton to pick up a patient and return to Thunder Bay. Shortly after takeoff, the crew experienced smoke emanating from the area ahead of the instrument panel. The crew advised Thunder Bay control tower that they were encountering an electrical fire and they would be returning to land. No actual flames were seen; all electrical systems were turned off and the smoke dissipated. The crew landed the aircraft without further incident. The crew of two and the medevac nurse exited the aircraft without injury. Inspection by company maintenance personnel determined that the wiring harness feeding the propeller syncrophaser had chafed against the forward radio screen.
