Incident at REGINA INTL SK (CYQR)

Summary

1996-02-15: Aircraft was departing runway 31 at Regina. During take-off roll, the crew heard 2 or 3 loud bangs and experienced significant airframe vibration. They rejected take-off and stopped on the runway, and the ERS responded immediately. After being advised by the ERS that smoke was coming from the engine, the captain ordered an emergency evacuation of the aircraft. High winds hampered the use of the emergency chutes and most passengers and crew evacuated the aircraft onto the runway using the airstairs. There were no injuries, but the #1 engine had been damaged and the 2 right main landing gear tires had blown.
