Accident at Mahone Bay, NS

1997-11-13: Pilot reported by telephone to Yarmouth FSS that his aircraft had been involved in an accident. 3 POB - 2 transported to hospital and pilot to go shortly. Extent of injuries and damages unknown. TSB investigating. Update: Pilot departed 1400 ft strip on a forty-five minute sight seeing trip with two passengers onboard. The approach to the strip included a decent to about 50 ft over the lake and a left turn to align with the runway. After the left turn the pilot was unable to see forward due to the position of the sun and its intensity. The pilot applied full power and lowered the nose to increase the airspeed but the aircraft hit some trees on the right and entered the woods at the right of the departure end. Aircraft came to rest on its right side with the right wing removed, the left wing folded against the fuselage and the upper cabin structure separated from the aircraft. Pilot removed the passengers from the aircraft with only minor injuries. TSB is investigating.
