Incident at North Atlantic (ATS operating irregularity)
1997-09-15: COA 5 and United Airlines (UAL)605, both B747 aircraft, were proceeding westbound through Gander Oceanic Airspace on tracks Charlie and Delta respectively at flight level(FL) 310. COA progressed 62N50W at 1415z and 60N60W at 1532z. UAL progressed 61N50W at 1454z and 59N60W at 1531z. When COA progressed by 56W, Montreal Centre observed on radar (Gander does not have radar coverage of this area) that the aircraft had deviated south of track and was conflicting with UAL. The two aircarfts came within 35 miles of each other. The crew of CAO advised at ATC that they had left the flight director on heading mode.
