Incident at Gander Ocean

Summary

1996-10-24: The crew observed that the oil quantity in the #3 engine was at a low level and decreasing. They declared an emergency, shut down the engine, turned 30 miles north of track and descended from flight level 330 to FL290. During the descent, a technical loss of separation occurred with British Airways (BAW) 91. TSC 161 continued to destination without further incident. Maintenance discovered that the loss of oil was due to a missing magnetic plug on the engine gearbox. The plug was replaced and the engine checked serviceable during a ground run. TSB case closed.
