Incident at HANMER

Summary

1993-11-09: EH80 ENSTROM 280C C-FHMC - WHILE IN CRUISE FLIGHT AT 500'AGL, ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN ROUGH AND LOSE POWER. AUTOROTATION INTO A FIELD WAS INITIATED SAFELY TO GROUND. ON THE GROUND, PILOT WAS ABLE TO KEEP ENGINE OPERATING AND PICKED A/C UP INTO A HOVER FOR 10-15 MIN. ENGINE APPEARED TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY, SO PILOT TOOK OFF AND CLIMBED TO 150-200' BEFORE ENGINE RAN ROUGH AND LOST PARTIAL POWER. SECOND AUTOROTATION TO GROUND WITH POWER RECOVERY LANDING WASPERFORMED. PILOT EXAMINED A/C AND NOTICED THAT A TAIL ROTOR BLADE STRIKE TAB AND STINGER WERE BENT. INDUCTION SYSTEM SUMP DRAINS WERE FOUND TO BE THE CAUSE. FROM TSB INITIAL NOTIFICATION. TIME = 2130Z. ACTION = PAX, PAH, PAE.
