Incident at HECLA ISLAND

Summary

1998-01-22: HB4 BELL 206 C-GCHE - A/C WAS ON LIGHTHOUSE MAINTENANCE FLIGHT FOR CAN COAST GUARD. PILOT WAS APPROACHING LANDING SITE NEAR SEVERAL CHANNEL MARKERS WHEN HE FOUND A STRONG WIND BLOWING THERE. HE ELECTED NOT TO USE SITE AND LANDED ON FROZEN MARSHY AREA INSTEAD. PILOT REMAINED IN HELI WITH ENGINE RUNNING WHILE 2 PAX DEPARTED TO WORK AT SITE. AFTER PAX RETURNED, PILOT ATTEMPTED 'NO HOVER' TAKE-OFF. HE WAS CONCERNED THAT IF HE USED A 'NO HOVER' TAKE-OFF, TAIL MIGHT STRIKE NEARBY TALL GRASS. AS PILOT APPLIED COLLECTIVE, A/C STARTED TO ROLL TO LEFT. PILOT REDUCED POWER AND LOWERED COLLECTIVE. A/C SETTLED ON UNEVEN GROUND, BENDING RIGHT REAR EMERGENCY POPOUT FLOAT. PILOT INSPECTED A/C AND FOUND LEFT FORWARD SKID HAD SNAGGED A TREE STUMP HIDDEN IN SNOW. PILOT TOOK-OFF SAFELY AND FLEW A/C TO GIMLI FOR INSPECTION AND THEM CONTINUED ON TO WINNIPEG. POP-OUT FLOAT WAS REPAIRED AND A/C RETURNED TO SERVICE. TIME = 1740Z.
