Incident at THOMPSON

Summary

1998-01-14: C185 SKYWAGON C-FSSZ & DHC2 BEAVER C-FYMV - THE DHC2 WAS BEING PUSHED OFF THE DOCK AT THOMPSON RIVER UNDER CONDITIONS OF ERRATIC WINDS AND A BACK CURRENT. FOUR (4) OTHER A/C THAT WERE MOORED HAD BEEN MOVED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO PROVIDE THE DEPARTING A/C WITH MANOUVERING ROOM. ONCE THE DHC2 WAS CLEAR, PILOT STARTED THE ENGINE FOR WATER TAXI. A COMBINATION OF WIND AND BACK CURRENT PUSHED THE A/C BACK TOWARDS THE DOCKWHERE ITS LEFT WING STRUCK THE ROTATING BEACON OF A C185. THE PILOT IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE, BUT BEFORE THE PROP CAME TO A FULL STOP, THE A/C SWUNG COUNTER-CLOCKWISE, HITTING THE RIGHT WING OF THE C185 WITH THE PROP. DAMAGE TO DHC2 IS MINOR. THE TRAILING EDGE OF C185'S RIGHT WING WAS SUBSTANCIALLY DAMAGED. TIME = 0105Z.
