Incident at WINNIPEG (Communication navigation surveillance/air traffic system)

Summary

1998-01-14: BL28 C-GQNQ - REPORTED COMMUNICATIONS PROBLEMS & ENGINE FAILURE OVER LAKE MANITOBA. PILOT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE, & RE-ESTABLISH COMMUNICATIONS WITH WINNIPEG TOWER 35 MILES NW OF WINNIPEG. TOWER CONTROLLER ISSUED AN ADVISORY ON WARREN, MANITOBA, BUT THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THAT AIRPORT. THE A/C CONTINUED TOWARD WINNIPEG & EXPERIENCED A PARTIAL ENGINE FAILURE AT 2.5 MILES ON APPROACH TO RWY 13 AT WINNIPEG. THE A/C LANDED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE APPROACH LIGHTS, THEN TAXIED ONTO RWY 13 & CONTINUED TO THE RAMP. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE A/C OR ANYTHING ON THE GROUND. ACA571, A DC-8 FROM TORONTO TO WINNIPEG, WAS DELAYED BY A WIDE VECTOR & A SUBSEQUENT 360 DEGREE TURN. TIME - 0615Z. ACTION - NIL.
