Incident at ARSENAULT LAKE

Summary

1997-12-17: HBO4 C-FCYW - PILOT WAS IN THE FINAL STAGES OF LANDING WITH THE HELICOPTER APPROX. 2' ABOVE GROUND LEVEL WHEN A LOUD NOISE WAS HEARD & THE HELICOPTER BEGAN TO YAW SLOWLY. PILOT CONTROLLED THE YAW BY REDUCING THROTTLE & LANDED SAFELY. NO INJURIES. INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE HELICOPTER TAIL ROTOR DRIVE SYSTEM SUFFERED A FAILURE OF THE 42-DEGREE GEARBOX. TIME - 0145Z. ACTION - NIL.
