Accident at THOMPSON

1993-03-23: C150 CESSNA C-FUTR - A/C DEPARTED THOMPSON AFTER ADVISING THE TOWER OF A PROPOSED FLIGHT TO THE TWIN LAKES AREA AT 2205Z. A/C WAS LAST SEEN 1 MILE EAST OF THE THOMPSON A/P, NW BOUND. AT 2233Z, THOMPSON RCMP PHONED THE TOWER AND ASKED IF THEY WERE AWARE OF A DOWNED A/C NORTH OF THE A/P. THE A/C WAS REPORTED BY THE RCMP TO HAVE CRASHED IN THE BUSH EAST OF LYNN LAKE HIGHWAY IN THE VICINITY OF TWIN LAKES. AN OUTBOUND A/C PICKED UP THE ELT AND RESCUE ACTION WAS INITIATED. TIME = 2233Z. TSB UPDATE: The wheel equipped Cessna 150 with the pilot and passenger on board took off at 16:05 CST from the Thompson airport to carry out an aerial search for a lost radio-controlled model aircraft. Two witnesses, who were ground members of the search team saw the Cessna descend out of sight and when it did not reappear, a ground and air search was started. The downed Cessna was located by another aircraft eight miles north of the Thompson airport. The two occupants were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The rescue was hampered by very wet terrain and dense bush. The pilot reported that he had been flying a grid search pattern at low airspeed with the wing flaps set at the 20 degrees position. While carrying out a 180-degree turn to continue the search, the aircraft stalled and crashed into the trees and came to rest in an inverted position. The pilot could not remember the specific airspeed he was manuevering. The aircraft was substantially damaged. The ELT was activated by the forces involved but the antenna was shielded by the wreckage thereby rendering the ELT ineffective.
